What We're Doing
Unlocking human promise is at the heart of who we are, and with that comes a commitment to protecting the health and wellbeing of our employees. We are actively monitoring COVID-19 in partnership with the Steelcase security team, the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control and have issued new policies for everyone working at or visiting one of our locations. As this situation evolves, we’ll assess these guidelines and change them as necessary to ensure we’re doing all we can to keep people and workspaces safe.
Join the Effort
We’re honored to support our hospitals and healthcare workers in the fight against COVID-19. By using our plants, model shop and innovation center to rapidly develop solutions, Steelcase is collaborating with others and scaling efforts to provide thousands of masks and face shields for the communities where we live and work. Want to get involved? We’re making our design resources and instructions available to everyone.?Learn how you can help.
Steelcase is exploring every possibility to support the COVID-19 response, including how best to use our facilities to supply critical healthcare resources and medical equipment needs. We are currently exploring making masks, partitions and other PPE for healthcare environments. We will continue to consider ways to create other items necessary for our nation’s medical community to provide a robust response. This is an extraordinary crisis that necessitates extraordinary measures and actions from both the public and private sectors. Steelcase will do everything possible to fight back against this pandemic.
Implemented social distancing
Our facilities team has also made key changes to our physical spaces to ensure proper distancing. For example, we’ve moved furniture and shifted layouts to reduce contact and increase the space between people. We’ve also intensified the cleaning and sanitization cadence on all our campuses in accordance with current guidelines.
We’ve eliminated large company gatherings and are mandating a reduction in other face-to-face meetings. We’ve canceled upcoming Steelcase events that bring more than 10 people together and are creatively using technology to reimagine collaboration.
Steelcase has restricted all non-critical commercial air travel beyond current COVID-19 hotspot to include all geographies. As a preventive measure, we’re additionally requiring all visitors to complete and pass a health screening questionnaire prior to entering any of our facilities. Review our updated visitor policy here.
An Update From Steelcase, March 25
At Steelcase, our latest fiscal year closed at the end of February 2020. It was our best year in 20 years. We grew, we improved our market share and we improved our profitability. All three regions – Americas, EMEA and APAC – exceeded expectations. The Steelcase community is the driving engine behind this success.
Yet, only one short month later, we find ourselves in an extraordinary situation. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global crisis.
We’ve implemented protocols to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of our Steelcase community – this must be and is our first priority. And we’re collaborating with essential industries like healthcare – leveraging our expertise and capabilities to help them scale and grow their capacity. In Grand Rapids, we are building special screens to protect hospital workers from becoming infected as they interact with potential COVID-19 patients, and we are looking at many ways we can assist essential healthcare services.
During the crisis, Steelcase will continue to serve its global customers – many of whom are also working hard to help society overcome this crisis. Wherever possible, we continue to take orders, make furniture, ship and install furniture, despite facing increasing challenges.
Given the temporary suspension of operations in many of our factories, largely driven by containment measures in areas like the United States and India, we need to take quick actions to reduce costs.
One of our guiding principles is that we are all in this together, and we need to share the burden of getting through the crisis while avoiding terminations or permanent plant closures.
These are the immediate actions Steelcase is taking in the United States:
- The salary for Steelcase CEO Jim Keane will be reduced to $1. The Steelcase Board of Directors has also reduced their cash compensation to zero. Members of the senior management team will take a 60% reduction in their base pay. The team will continue to work full-time through the crisis at those lower pay levels.
- For office workers, there is still work being done remotely, but there will be less work as the production system slows and some work cannot easily be done at home. Beginning April 6, with only a few exceptions, office-based employees in the U.S. will temporarily move to a reduced work week and reduced salary level. Steelcase will pay 100% of health insurance premiums and certain other benefits during this time.
- Except for continuing to serve essential industries as allowed by law, nearly all production employees in Michigan will be temporarily laid off. These employees will be eligible for state unemployment benefits and Steelcase will pay 100% of health care insurance premiums and certain other benefits during this time.
The employee-related actions outside of the United States are different in each country, because of differences in local laws, benefit plans and government programs.
We’ve worked hard to find the right balance between protecting all our employees and protecting the future viability of our business. We’re well positioned in that respect, and fully expect to rebuild together as we move through this crisis.
In an effort to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, we’re asking outside visitors to complete a health questionnaire prior to a planned visit to one of our facilities.
